Why Was This Site Created?


Because the Hispanic/Latino community is an underserved and growing population, the largest minority in the United State. Many Hispanic/Latinos face a language barrier. And because, although there is a wealth of resources to be tapped, there is no comparable portal on the internet. Although this web site was created as part of the service of the Indiana Prevention Resource Center to the citizens of Indiana, it serves equally well for all of the citizens of the U.S. and can be useful for the citizens of the world.

Who Is the Target Audience for This Site?

Hispanic/Latino Americans (by birth, legal and undocumented residents), people who work with Hispanics/Latinos (like health care workers and teachers), those interested in Hispanic/Latinos (like students and program leaders), and others (like Latinos living outside the U.S. and other Spanish- or Portuguese-speakers).

What is the Philosophical Orientation of This Site?

This site is based on the following assumptions: Asset building is an effective prevention method. Knowledge is power. Tools and skills empower action. This site can open the door to many resources. This site can offer something for everyone. This site can be simple and browsable.

What Strategies Are Used to Connect People to Resources?

This site uses the following strategies or materials: language accessibility (3 languages versions), Hispanic/Latino focused ATOD materials, relevant ATOD materials for general public, Hispanic/Latino focused relevant materials, relevant materials for general public, national/international resources, and research tools.

What Types of Links Are Included on This Site?

This site includes links to the following types of information and sites: prevention; alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; HIV/AIDS; general health resources; asset building, including cultural pride; and research tools like databases and bibliographies.

What Are Some Benefits/Goals of Asset Building?

They include strong family ties, parental monitoring of children, parental involvement in children's lives, conventional norms about drug use, school success and bonding, knowledge acquisition, skill acquisition, and cultural pride.
