Abstract: Australia is dealing with a serious oxycontin addition problem. Both recreational users who doctor shop and/or buy the drug on the street, and ordinary citizens who are prescribed the drug for legitimate pain commonly find themselves addicted and unable to stop using. 2 million prescriptions for the drug are written each year (in a country of 22 million people) and pharmacies lack the ability to monitor these prescriptions to detect doctor shoppers or fraudulent prescriptions. Individuals profiled in the video include a former dealer who was able to easily scam prescriptions by claming back pain, or steal prescription pads (he eventually did jail time and is now off drugs, but his health is ruined), and a middle class woman who became addicted after being prescribed the drug for real back pain. (After a suicide attempt and treatment, she too is off the drug.) Prescription drug abuse is an especially serious problem in small towns, where illicit narcotics are not sold. Experts are beginning to educate doctors are how to recognize doctor shoppers, and encouraging them to look for other ways of managing chronic pain. The need for computerized prescription monitoring is also discussed.

Abstract: The state of Massachusetts has one of the highest rates of heroin addiction in the country, and overdose deaths now exceed those relaeted to auto accidents. (Over 3200 deaths over a 5 year period between 2002 and 2007.) Many addicts got started on their addiction through Oxycontin. This documentary puts a very human face on the problem by following two young addicts as they first became addicted, and have tried repeatedly to get clean. Frank was a high school athlete, pescribed the drugs to deal with the pain after a serious injury. He quickly became addicted to the prescribed meds, and when his doctor reduced his dose, began buying the pills on the street, stealing money from family and friends to cover the$60-$80 per pill cost. After a few months he was introduced to heroin, and found it to be a faster and much cheaper fix. Rebecca also became addicted in high school, introduced to oxycontin, and then to heroin, by her drug using/dealing boyfriend. With doctors in Massachuesetts now less likely to prescribe the pills, and many pharmacies no longer stocking them (after repeated robberies), most street-pills are now brought in from Florida, where they are easier to get. In an attempt to reduce the devastating death toll, some people have turned to a harm-reduction approach, providing Narcan to the family and friends of addicts. But the overall problem of addiction shows no signs of going away, or even declining. (Both young people profiled had relapsed by the end of the video, and were back on drugs.)

In this DVD, real addicts describe their personal journeys through Methamphetamine use. Users commonly started with occassional recreational use, but quickly found themselves addicted, needing more and more of the drug, and spending increasing amounts of money and time getting and using the drug. The video focuses on the harm of drug use, as users describe their emotional decline (suicide attempts, lost relationships) and physical deterioration (weight loss, tooth loss, severe health problems.) Each user eventually entered treatment and they go on to describe the way their lives changed for the better after getting treatment. While relapses are common, and users in recovery take things one day at a time, all emphasize that treatment and recovery mean life -- and continued use often means death. Also available in Spanish language version.
