Abstract: Webinar provides a wide range of general and specific tips for professionals working with young children from culturally diverse backgrounds. Topics covered include the use of interpreters, understanding and working with special religious and cultural needs, providing clear explanations, dealing with parental fears (i.e. fears that undocumented immigration status, poverty/crowded living conditions might result in legal or child custody issues), and the need to the professional to recognize his or her own cultural biases. (i.e., just because a parent does something that is different from the U.S. cultural norm doesn't mean it is wrong or dangerous.) While the video is targeted at professionals working with young children in social-service situations, much of the information would be helpful for a wider range of professionals working with culturally diverse populations.

This video (originally aired on ""Frontline"") examines the increased diagnosis, and increasing use of medication to trea,t serious psychiatric disorders in children. Bipolar disorder in particular is being diagnosed more and more frequently. As of 2007 there were over a million children in the U.S, some as young as 4 years old, . being medicated for the disorder. This increase in diagnosis came after a group of researchers in Massachusetts published a study in which they suggested that many children diagnosed with ADHD actually have BPD. Because there is no clear way of diagnosing BPD, especially in young children, children are often labeled with the disorder based on beliefs of the doctor and a variety of clinical symptoms. And because most medications have not been adequated tested (or tested at all) in children, prescribing meds is also a matter of trial and error. Some children profiled in the video have been on as many as 8 different meds at one time, with some of the drugs prescribed solely to treat side effects of other medications. Yet some doctors are leaning towards prescribing even more medications, recommending preventive dosing for children showing early symptoms that might some day progress to a full-blown pysyciatric disorder.

In this study, drinking patterns of Mexican-American mothers and children in single parent households were compared to their peers in two-parent households. 246 single mothers (primarily divorced or separated) and their children were compared with 1022 mothers and children living in dual-parent homes. Single mothers were found to drink much more often, and more heavily, than mothers in two-parent homes, with divorced/separated mothers drinking more than those who were widowed or never married. While a majority of single-mothers were poor and employed, higher income was associated with heavier drinking. Acculturation also appeared to be a factor. No significant differences were seen in drinking patterns of adolescent children living in these households.
