Abstract: Depression and suicide rates among Latina teens are far higher than most other ethnic group. Over 13% of adolescents in this population attempted suicide in 2012 -- nearly twice the rate of their African-American and white peers. It is vital that we understand the underlying causes for depression and suicidal ideation, and deal with them appropriately.

U.S. born Hispanic girls were at higher risk than those born outside the U.S. Among non-Hispanic youth, about 16% of girls were at risk for suicide in 2000, compared with 18% of Hispanic girls. While it's unclear why this group has such high suicide rates, strained family relationships due to cultural differences may be a factor. About one third of girls at risk for suicide received mental health treatment.
