Cocaine COCAINE is a powerful stimulant drug drawn from the leaves of Erythroxylon coca, the South American coca bush. It is an alkaloid, a member of the chemical family that includes nicotine, caffeine and morphine. Cocaine is made into a paste and its contents heated with hydrochloric acid to produce cocaine hydrochloride, the most common, water soluble form of cocaine, which can be snorted through the nasal passages, intravenously injected or taken by mouth.
